FIFA World Cup 2022, Group G: Switzerland defeat Serbia 3-2, storms into Round of 16 with Brazil

Switzerland won a five-goal thriller to seal their spot for the next round.

All four teams of Group G were in action on 3 December 2022 for the last time in the group stage. However, Brazil already sealed their place in the Round of 16 after winning the first two matches. But, the other teams had their chances to qualify for the knockout round. So, fans were expecting an enthralling battle in those must-win clashes. 

Brazil locked horns with Cameroon in the Lusail Stadium. In the other game, Switzerland took on Serbia in Stadium 974. But, it was another sad news for Brazil fans as their star man Neymar missed this clash again due to his ankle injury. So, a tough test was waiting for Brazil ahead of the knockout stage in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Brazil vs Cameroon

Brazil made several changes in their lineup for this clash. However, they managed a steady start to the game instantly. In the second minute, Fred managed a shot. But, Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Devis Epassy made a comfortable shot. Then, Martinelli shot a header which again, Epasssy managed to keep away from the goal. Then, in the 20th minute, Cameroon had a chance to go ahead.

Eric Maxim Choupo-moting had a shot but Eder Militao came up with a brave block to prevent him. However, both teams came close to opening the scoring but they were falling to penetrate the final third. Thus, the first half ended 0-0. In the second half, Brazil’s attacking talent produce many chances. But, either they failed to convert those or Epassy managed to keep those away from the goal. But, in the 90+2′ minute, Vincent Aboubakar scored the opener for Cameroon. Finally, the game ended 1-0 in favor of Cameroon. 

Serbia vs Switzerland

Both teams started the game steadily as it was a must-win encounter for both of them. But, Xherdan Shaqiri scored the opener for Switzerland in the 20th minute. Mohameth Sow assisted him in that buildup. Then, Serbia came up with an instant response. They scored the equalizer, thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic while Dusan Tadic assisted him. 

Then, Dusan Vlahovic made it 2-1 in the 35th minute in favor of Serbia. But, the first half ended 2-2 as Breel Embolo scored the second goal for Switzerland. Silvan Widmer assisted Embolo in that buil-up. In the second half, Remo Freuler gave the lead to Switzerland in the 48th minute.  Ruben Vargas assisted him in that goal. After that, they managed to hold their lead till the final whistle. Finally, they won the match 3-2 and qualified for the Round of 16.
