The FC Barcelona and Frankie de Jong saga just refuses to die down. In recent news, it has been reported that Barcelona are threatening legal action against the midfielder.

The Catalan club has asked de Jong to slash his wages or face charges. The Spanish club has said that de Jong’s current contract has “evidence of criminality” within it.

The Athletics journalist David Ornstein tweeted, “Barcelona told Frenkie de Jong on July 15 they have evidence of criminality around contract given by old board + cause for legal action vs all involved. FC Barcelona asked him to annul the deal & revert to previous terms.”

It was reported that Barcelona accepted an offer from Manchester United last month. The player however rejected that offer as he did not want to join the English club. Reports also say that Barcelona wrote to their own player and told him that there were evidence of criminal actions in the contract renal signed on October 20, 2020. De Jong had to reduce his salary when extending his contract for another two years in order to help reduce Barcelona’s financial woes.

The revised deal means that Barcelona still needed to pay £15.2million to De Jong in the four years at the Spanish club.
Other Barcelona players such as Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Marc- Andre ter Stegen also signed similar contracts that had reduced salaries for them.

De Jong is now asked to revert his contract back to his original contract signed in January 2019. Barcelona claim De Jong’s agent of alleged criminality while signing the contract.

De Jong is a Barca player: Joan Laporta

Barcelona club president Joan Laporta had earlier said, “He (De Jong) is a Barca player of great quality and we want him to stay. He has offers but we want him to stay and he wants to stay too.”

Barcelona are on a course to get back to their best after doing poorly for a couple of years. They have made some striking signings in this transfer market aiming at the top. Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Andres Christensen, Rafinha and Franck Kessie are some of the buys of the Catalan club this season.
