With a 0-2 deficit after losing the second Twenty20 International of their five-match series versus the West Indies, England’s startlingly bad white-ball form persisted. The defending T20 World Cup champions won the toss and chose to field first. They were able to reduce the home team to 54/4 during the ninth over.
But an 80-run stand between captain Rovman Powell and Brandon King pulled off a surprising comeback to save the innings. Thanks to their heroics, West Indies managed to reach 176/7 in their 20 overs.
England’s response saw another disastrous start as captain Jos Buttler was out for five during the third over. England remained in the game throughout thanks to a number of mediocre pairings. Still, wickets at regular intervals kept impeding their progress.
In the end, they had a great deal to do and lost by ten runs. Even though Sam Curran scored a solid half-century, it could not take them over the line. After the loss, England’s only chance to secure the series was to win the next three games.
The England white-ball team has already been the subject of many questions after their disastrous 2023 World Cup bid and their ODI series loss to the West Indies.
The Jos Buttler-led team won just three of its nine matches to finish outside of the final four during the World Cup, despite being one of the pre-tournament favourites. The defeats against the West Indies only served to make England’s declining white-ball fortunes even more concerning.
“Sam did well and took it deep” : Jos Buttler after England’s loss to West Indies
Jos Buttler, the captain of England, said that there were not many points in the game and that the team might have done more to win. The post-match presentation didn’t depress Buttler too much, but he thought the bowlers could have held the West Indies to a much lower total.
Jos Buttler told the reporters after losing the second T20I as he said, “Few many more than what we could have restricted them to. Plenty of ways we could have found those 10 runs. Motie was operating in the middle and we sent Sam up the order. But Motie bowled really well. Sam did well and took it deep.”
