Experienced England quick Stuart Broad recently disclosed that his wife Molly prefers another player over him. Chris Woakes topped his wife’s list, according to Broad, especially in light of the right-arm pacer’s match-winning performances at Headingley.
Woakes, who was taking part in his very first Test of the season, was crucial to England’s three-wicket victory at Headingley. The 34-year-old took six wickets and closed the fourth innings by scoring an unbeaten 32 to help the team bat down a challenging 251.

The 37-year-old Nottinghamshire seamer, who has previously helped England win two World Cup finals, believes Headingley observed Woakes’ outstanding performance. Stuart Broad wrote in a column for the Daily Mail as he said, “Woakesy’s just an amazing cricketer. My wife, Mollie, told me he was her favourite player, to which I replied: ‘What about me?’ She said: ‘You’re second.’ Thanks very much. The biggest compliment I can pay him is that he’s helped win two World Cup finals, but last week at Headingley was the most important all-round contribution he has made.”
The pacer then heaped praise on fellow speedster Mark Wood and how he is essential to the England side. He said, “England are a better team with Wood in it — not just because of his extra pace, which is a thrill to watch from close up, but because of the energy he brings. I didn’t see him on all fours in the Headingley dressing room barking like a dog, which is what Ollie Robinson has suggested, but worryingly I can believe it.”
With seven wickets over the course of the match, particularly five inside the first innings, Wood proved yet another crucial factor in England’s victory at Headingley. The 33-year-old also produced two priceless bat cameos. England would be hoping that the pace trio of Mark Wood, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes can lead the England team to another victory over arch-rivals Australia in the final two tests of the Ashes 2023.
