‘Dil jeet liya bro’- Fans awestruck as Shafali Verma leads Delhi to a 10 wicket-win over Gujarat with destructive 76 run-knock off just 28 balls
In the ninth game of the Women’s T20 League, Meg Lanning-led Delhi defeated Gujarat by 10 wickets on Saturday. After losing against Mumbai, Delhi bounced back to come back on the winning track. After winning the toss, Gujarat opted to bat first but the decision didn’t go well.
Gujarat was restricted to 105 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. Kim Garth was the top scorer for the team as she scored 32 runs off 37 balls. Harleen Deol and Georgia Warhem also tried to put in some runs but failed to capitalize on quick starts. For Delhi, wicketkeeper-batter Shafali Verma and South Africa superstar Marizanne Kapp shone brightly with bat and ball respectively.
In the first innings, Kapp clinched five wickets to restrict Gujarat to a below-par total. She finished with extraordinary numbers of 4-0-15-5. Meanwhile, she got great support from Indian right-arm medium pacer Shikha Pandey as she claimed 3 wickets and stopped the flow of runs along with Kapp.
Gujarat succumbed to Shafali Verma’s brutal knock
In the second innings, Delhi skipper Meg Lanning along with Shafali Verma came to open the innings for the team. They added record 107 runs in just seven overs to finish the game. Shafali, who was playing one of the most aggressive innings, hammered Gujarat bowlers to all parts and didn’t give them any escape.
Shafali, during her innings, scored 76 runs off 28 balls with the help of 10 fours and five sixes. She was well supported by Lanning, who played as the second fiddle to Shafali. Australia’s skipper scored 21 runs off 15 balls with the help of three boundaries.
This is Delhi’s third win in four games. They are second placed in the points table following Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai, who are table toppers with the same number of points in three games.
On the other hand, this is Gujarat’s third loss in four games and they are placed at fourth on the points table. Their only win came against Smriti Mandhana-led Bangalore who has failed to win any game in the tournament, till now.
Meanwhile, fans reacted to Delhi’s dominating performance and called them one of the biggest contenders for the Trophy. A Twitter user said, “Mumbai Delhi me finals krwa do.”
