Steve Smith’s shift to the opening position will see him partner with Usman Khawaja, allowing Cameron Green to take the coveted spot at four in the batting lineup. Bailey addressed questions about whether this change was an experiment and if Smith might return to his previous position at No. 4 if he faces challenges as an opener.
Bailey responded, “Tongue in cheek, I could say everything’s an experiment. That’s been part of the discussions with Steve; I believe he’s keen for this to be a significant chapter of his career.” When asked if Smith is expected to continue playing as an opener until he retires from Test cricket, Bailey stated, “He may do. It’s not something he’s doing on a whim or something he wants to do for one match and see how he goes.”

In a statement released by Cricket Australia, Bailey noted, “Cameron Green will come into the playing XI for the Test in Adelaide in a squad also containing Scott Boland and Matthew Renshaw.
