After India’s disappointing campaign in the 20-20 World Cup 2022, the Indian senior players were given a break to get back to their best. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan returned into the camp and went against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
Bangladesh won the match and invited Team India to put runs on the board. The quite successful pairing of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan came as the two openers after a very long time. Many had hoped that the duo would showcase a batting masterclass from the days gone by. The reality however was quite different. Dhawan failed to score big runs and was dismissed at just 7 in 17 deliveries. Star India batter Virat Kohli walked in next but could not steady the innings as he was dismissed at just 9 as well. Shreyas Iyer who has been getting chances in the team also failed to come up with a big score.
It was KL Rahul, a player who has been under criticism for his T20I performance, who took to the crease and played a good anchor inning. The right-hand batter made 73 off 70 as wickets from the other end kept falling.
On the back of Rahul’s half-century knock, India reached 186 in 41.2 overs. The bowlers had a steep task at hand but they came out with a resurgent motivation. Deepak Chahar broke the deadlock on the very first ball as he dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto with a peach of a delivery.
The Indian bowlers kept on taking wickets on regular intervals as none of the Bangladesh batters could stand their ground. At 136/9 it looked like the match would go in Team India’s favour but Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman had a different opinion altogether. Both combined and made a 48-run partnership for the last wicket to take Bangladesh across the finish line. Rahul who batted brilliantly in the first innings dropped an easy catch of Hasan which many fans have claimed to be the point that lost India the match.
As a result of this, India have lost the first ODI against Bangladesh and fans were seething watching the manner of the loss.
