1. 254 against Pakistan in 2016

In the second Test in Manchester, the home team won the toss and elected to bat first. Thanks to Alastair Cook‘s hundred, Joe Root’s double hundred, and fifties from Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow, the team reached 589/8 declared. Root hit 27 fours and didn’t a six. In the end, the team won the game by 330 runs.   

2. 228 against Sri Lanka in 2021

In the first Test against the Lankan Lions in 2021, the home team won the toss and surrendered with only 135 on the board. 5. 200 not out against Sri Lanka in 2014

In the first Test of the two-match series (which turned out to be a historic one), the home team was asked to bat first and reached 575/9 with Root hitting an unbeaten double-hundred. In the end, the game ended in a draw with one wicket in hand for Sri Lanka.
