‘Cheating is in Australian cricket team DNA’ – ‘Cheating’ trends on Twitter after Shubman Gill’s controversial dismissal in WTC final 2023
India need to chase down 444 runs to win the WTC final 2023.
India’s opening batters, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma provided a great start as the team is chasing 444 runs to win the WTC final 2023. The 2021 finalists had a great start as the duo scored 41 runs in the first seven overs. Sharma scored 22 off 25 balls including a six and three fours at the point. On the other hand, Gill got 18 off as many balls including three fours before edging the ball to gully.
Australia all-rounder Cameron Green was stationed at the gully and made an attempt to take the catch. However, after he grabbed the ball and claimed the catch. On the other hand, the on-field umpires referred it to the third umpire. After watching multiple replays, the TV umpire gave it out. While the likes of Sharma and Gill didn’t seem to have agreed with the decision, the fans are calling the Australian team, cheats.

Ball is clearly touching the ground between those two fingers.
Poor umpiring costed Shubman Gill's wicket. This was not expected at such a big stage.

Soft-signal wasn’t used in Shubman Gill’s dismissal
Meanwhile, last month, the World Cricket Council removed the soft signal for the ongoing summit clash. For the unversed, the umpires give an instinctive decision while referring to the third umpire for a catch. However, a month ahead of the game, the World Cricket Governing Council removed the soft signal.
Meanwhile, in the game, for the first time in international cricket, the umpires on the field didn’t have the luxury. At this point, the dismissal has caused a lot of controversies already. While the game is in progress, the fans can be heard chanting ‘Cheaters’ directed at the Aussies.
“The on-field umpires will consult with the TV umpire before any decisions are taken,” the Apex Council confirmed when the changes was announced in May.
“Soft signals have been discussed at previous cricket committee meetings over the last couple of years,” Sourav Ganguly of the Men’s Cricket Committee added.
“The committee deliberated this at length and concluded that soft signals were unnecessary and at times confusing since referrals of catches may seem inconclusive in replays.”
