‘Charged us hefty amount for medals’- 6 time Gold-medalist Srihari Nataraj slams airline for mistreatment

Indian sportspersons being disrespected is not very uncommon in the country.

Olympian Srihari Nataraj who represented India in theĀ  Tokyo Olympics has expressed disappointment at receiving flight experience. In a strongly worded tweet, Nataraj has accused Indigo Airlines of poor treatment.

The incident took place when Nataraj was travelling from the National Games, Gujarat to Karnataka, his home state. The swimmer was returning after winning six Gold medals for Karnataka at 36th National Games held in Gujarat. The Indian athlete took to Twitter to share his ordeal with the airline company. He was left frustrated with the way the staff treated him and his teammates. Nataraj also accused the airlines of charging a hefty amount for excess baggage that contained medals.

“Dear @IndiGo6E I was returning from the National Games held in Gujarat, and the staff not only behaved badly but also charged us a hefty amount for excess baggage which was the medals and goodies that we athletes had won.

“Honestly, the amount wasn’t an issue, it’s the the way they treated me and my teammates. Should we leave the medals we win back at the venue?” he added.

Srihari Nataraj has won six gold medals at the National Games and also broke the national record by completing the race in 50.41 seconds. The Karnataka swimmer won two titles in backstroke and also clinched two in the relay.

Services Sports Control Board top the National Games points table

Karnataka have been doing great in the 38th National Games as they are currently fourth on the points table with a total of 84 medals. Of these 25 are gold, 23 are Silver and 36 are bronze. Services Sports Control Board meanwhile continues to take a comfortable lead at the top having won a total of 113 medals including 51 gold, 33 silver medals and 29 bronze medals.

Haryana with 97 and Maharashtra with 119 are the second and third teams in the National Games points table.
