Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, is expected to stand down before the ODI World Cup in India in 2023 as a result of the disaster at the Asia Cup 2023 final. Sri Lanka Cricket would shortly make it official, according to Rev Sports. This is being viewed as a significant setback for Sri Lanka before the main event considering the moment of the move.
One believes that this is not the proper decision because Shanaka is one amongst the top all-rounders in the team and has made the Lankan team into a formidable one.
Shanaka apologised for the significant loss and thanked the large audience for coming out in support of the Sri Lankan side. He said , “I would like to thank the fans who came in numbers, really sorry that we disappointed you. We as cricketers really love you. And congratulations to the Indian team for the brand of cricket they’re playing.”
Dasun Shanaka’s lean patch in International cricket
The Sri Lankan skipper then praised Mohammed Siraj for his outstanding spell during the Asia Cup 2023 final. “It was an outstanding display of bowling from Siraj, credit to him how he approached the game. I thought it would be a good pitch for the batters, but the overcast conditions played a part and it was a tough, tough day. Of course, the application could have been better, could’ve tightened our technique a bit to settle down and free our arms in the middle period.”
The 32-year-old has recently seen a slump in his performance in international cricket. The right-handed batter possessed a strike rate of 65.85 and just 54 runs across six innings at the Asia Cup 2023. Since 2022, he has played 33 times, scoring 489 runs at an average of 19.56.
After the more senior players of the side retired, Dasun Shanaka was crucial in reviving the Sri Lankan cricket team. In the UAE’s Asia Cup last year, he guided the group to victory. During his administration, Sri Lanka won 13 straight ODI matches, which included the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.
