‘Bhai tumhari toh koi baat maanni he nahi chahiye’ – Fans react to Ben Stokes coming out of ODI retirement ahead of World Cup 2023

Ben Stokes has been selected to play for England in their forthcoming four-match ODI series versus New Zealand at home under Jos Buttler’s leadership. Ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has persuaded the legendary all-rounder to return after retiring from the format in 2022 for the home series versus South Africa.

Since Stokes is considering surgery to address his problematic knee, initial reports of returning to ODIs were initially disregarded. He will likely play the forthcoming ODI season as well as the Test series versus India being a pure batter, though, before receiving medical attention.

The all-rounder may not be open to play for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) throughout the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024 as a result of the trade.

“Every fan will enjoy seeing him back in an England ODI shirt again” : Luke Wright

Ben Stokes’ re-entry into the team was announced in a brief statement by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Luke Wright, the selector for England’s men national team spoke about the all-rounder’s return. He said, “The return of Ben Stokes only adds to that quality with his match-winning ability and leadership. I am certain that every fan will enjoy seeing him back in an England ODI shirt again.”

While the majority of fans were thrilled with the thought of seeing the cricketer again in ODIs, a tiny group of supporters were not happy with how casually retirement is being condoned in contemporary cricket.

After clinching the 2019 World Cup competition on home soil, the all-arounder only competed in 10 ODIs. Along with taking a sabbatical for his mental health, he underlined that competing all three formats of cricket in international competition as well as franchise cricket proved to be too much.

At his home stadium in Durham, Stokes made the decision to call it quits after the first One-Day International match versus South Africa in 2022. He only made five runs off of eleven pitches before Aiden Markram had him out.
