England captain Ben Stokes believes the current five-match Ashes series would rank among the best men’s Ashes ever played if England were to triumph in the final two Tests starting at Old Trafford in Manchester. Following a thrilling victory at Headingley, the English team is prepared to tie the series 2-2 with Australia. The Australians, on the contrary, will be eager to avenge their loss at Leeds’ Headingley and win the series and retain the urn.
The cricket that has been played has been absolutely brilliant: Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes spoke to the media and discussed the kind of cricket on display during the first three tests and how this series has been one of the best in history. He said, “Well, I think if we win this one, and then go into the last game 2-2, then it’ll be hard not to say that this has been the best men’s Ashes series in a long time, if not the best. So yeah, I think just overall, like, take away Australia and England, just the cricket that has been played has been absolutely brilliant.”
The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder added, “And I think everyone who has watched at the ground or TV in England or TV at home has just really enjoyed the cricket that’s been played. You know, we have seen some special moments on the cricket field. You’ve seen some very special individual performances as well. And guess that’s what you want from sport.”
Although Australia will be counting on their formidable bowling attack to demolish the English batting order, it will be up to England’s batting lineup to perform under duress. In their previous 16 contests at Manchester, England has triumphed 13 times. However, since 1981, the Three Lions have yet to triumph at an Ashes Test in Manchester. Australia also defeated England in their previous meeting at Old Trafford in 2019 to retain the urn.
