In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, star India batter Virat Kohli has been phenomenal. With his amazing batting performances, Kohli lit up the tournament. He is also India’s highest run scorer in the ongoing tournament. However, apart from the trophy, Kohli is also chasing a massive milestone.

As he hammered his 48th ODI tonne against Bangladesh, Kohli is looking to break legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Sachin has the highest number of ODI centuries, and Kohli is just two more away from breaking his record. Speaking about the same, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar predicted the day when Kohli would hammer his 50th ODI tonne to break cords. He said that Kohli will score his 50th ODI tonne on his birthday against South Africa.

“Kohli will slam his 50th ODI Century against South Africa at the Eden Gardens, and what better occasion than his birthday? It’s a sight when you slam a tonne there because the Kolkata crowd gives you a standing ovation and cheers for you; the air is filled with whistles and claps. It is a moment to savour for every batter,” said Gavaskar while speaking on Star Sports.

Virat Kohli narrowly missed his 49th tonne against New Zealand

In the last match against New Zealand, Kohli was looking set to level Tendulkar’s record. However, he failed to score back-to-back centuries as he was dismissed by Matt Henry while trying to hit a six. He fell just five runs short of a well-deserved century. However, in the ongoing tournament, Kohli is the highest run scorer for India. He has amassed 354 runs in five innings at an average of 118.0 and a strike rate of 90.54.

If Gavaskar’s words are to be taken true, Kohli will need to smash a century in two upcoming games against England and Sri Lanka to level Tendulkar’s record. Then only he can hammer his record-breaking 50th tonne against South Africa on November 5 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the Indian team will also expect him to continue his dominance with the bat as the team eyes the prestigious trophy.
