Apart from his batting performances and match-winning spirit on the field, Virat Kohli is also known for the fitness culture that he built. He has taken the level of fitness higher in the Indian team, resulting in better performances from everyone.
And now, Bangalore’s strength and conditioning coach in the Indian T20 League 2022 Shanker Basu has said that Virat is the most enthusiastic person in the gym. Basu has also served as the Indian team’s fitness coach, and he has witnessed Kohli’s growth over the years. Basu told out about Kohli’s interest for working out and spending time at the gym while chatting on ‘Bold Diaries,’ the Bangalore team’s YouTube show. He said that he has a child-like excitement, and that has not changed over the years.
“What excites me is he comes like a child even today. What I saw in him when he was 19 or 20, in fact, the enthusiasm has not come down even that one per cent. In fact, it has only gone up. The drive and that steely resolve he has got are so inspiring,” Basu said.
Speaking on Virat Kohli’s workout routine, Basu said that his routine has to be evolved yearly based on situational needs. With the T20 World Cup around the corner, Virat is focusing on muscle strength, revealed Basu.
“Can’t actually do the same thing over and over again. The program has to change. Every year, we need to start tweaking. Track what’s needed and evolve accordingly. There’s nothing much. Keep doing the simple things, boring things consistently, that’s the mantra. Eat well, sleep well and train well and repeat,” he said.
“Virat is mainly… we are trying to build muscle mass. T20 also requires a lot of explosive energy; force production is a byproduct. It’s a mandatory thing for him to be strong. You also have the World Cup round the corner. So obviously, it’s a long-distance call as well as a short-distance call” he further added.
