Amidst the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Cricket Australia has announced their 15-member squad for a five-match T20I series against India. The board has announced veteran wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade as the skipper of the team, while senior pacers have been rested from the squad. It’s worth noting that India will take on Australia on November 23, 2023.
Eight out of 15 members of the squad are currently participating in the ongoing ODI World Cup. Players like Steve Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh will stay in India after the tournament. On the other hand, pacers like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazelwood will fly back to Australia after the ongoing showpiece.
The pacers will return home to prepare for the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan and the West Indies. However, players like Josh Inglis, Sean Abbott, and Tanveer Sangha will remain in India. Apart from them, T20 specialists Tim David, Matt Short, and Nathan Ellis will join the Australian team after the completion of the ongoing tournament.
“He is a leader we look for”, Australia chief selector George Bailey praised Matthew Wade
Speaking about the team selection, the chairman of the selection committee, George Bailey, says that he is happy with the mix of experience and youth in the squad. He also expressed his happiness for Matthew Wade to lead the squad. He said, “It’s an experienced squad with a mixture of players who have had their first opportunity on the international stage and that we hope will continue to develop into important players in our T20 group.”
“Matthew (Wade), who has captained the team previously, is a leader in the group, and we look forward to him taking the reins for this series. Like Mitch Marsh in the South Africa series, this is another great opportunity to further deepen our international leadership experience and depth. It’s always a great challenge to take on India on their home soil.”
