Chennai, led by MS Dhoni, has won their first game of the ongoing Indian T20 League 2023. They started the tournament with a loss against the defending champions, Gujarat. In their second game of the season, the Yellow Brigade won against Lucknow. This is also Chennai’s first win against Lucknow as they had lost in the only encounter played between them last season.

Meanwhile, during the game, the home team, Chennai pacers such as Tushar Despande and Deepak Chahar bowled quite a few wides. In the last few overs of the game, the duo was trying to bowl away from the batters. In the process, they were crossing wide lines. This led to a delay in the conclusion of the game. Also, the visitors managed to reduce the margin of loss by 12 runs.

If pacers are giving away extras, I will leave the captaincy: MS Dhoni

After the game, the former India skipper spoke about the pace bowling concerns. During the game, they were going for plenty while the spinner gave them control and wickets. Moeen Ali took four wickets while Mitchell Santner took one. On the other hand, the pacers accounted for only two wickets collectively.

During the post-match presentation, Dhoni said that the pacers need to improve their bowling further in the tournament. He added that fast bowlers need to bowl fewer wides and no no-balls. The right-hander further added that if pacers continue to falter, they might have to play under a new captain. Notably, he didn’t mean it as he laughed a bit in the end.

“It’s the fast bowling that will need to slightly improve and bowl according to the conditions. Even if it’s on the flatter side, force batters to hit over the fielders. They’ll have to bowl no no balls and less wides. We are bowling too many extra deliveries and need to cut them out otherwise they’ll be playing under a new captain,” MS Dhoni said in the post-match presentation.
