India’s athletes have showcased their exceptional talents as well as determination at the Asian Games 2023 by clinching many medals and making the nation proud. After securing 15 medals on Day 8, Indian athletes maintained their impressive performance in the Asian Games 2022, adding three silver and four bronze medals on Day 9.
Notably, both the men’s and women’s skating teams achieved historic podium finishes, securing bronze medals in the 3000-metre team event. In table tennis, Suthirtha Mukherjee and Ahikya Mukherjee, despite a valiant effort, settled for a bronze, marking a first in the event.
The Indian women’s Kabaddi team faced a tough challenge against Chinese Taipei, resulting in a 34-34 draw in the group match. The Indian men’s hockey team continued their dominance with a 12-0 victory over Bangladesh, securing a top spot in the group stage and advancing to the semi-finals. Additionally, defending champions Japan also reached the semi-finals by defeating Pakistan 3-2 in their last group match. The match was thrilling and the Indian team did well in the competition the performance showcased the bright side of the Indian team.
Track and field sports thrive in India
The evening track and field events started on a disappointing note for India in the Pole Vault, with Pavitra Venkatesh failing to secure a podium finish in the women’s event despite achieving a jump of 4.00 meters. However, in the women’s 3000-metre steeplechase, Paraul Chaudhary and Preeti clinched second and third place, earning silver and bronze medals.
The mixed team in the 4×400 meter relay initially finished third but received an upgrade to silver after the disqualification of the Sri Lankan team. Indian long jumper Ancy Sojan secured a silver medal, taking India past the 60-medal mark. Tejaswin Shree Shankar leads the men’s decathlon, while the Indian men’s and women’s Kabaddi teams and the men’s cricket team are set for group-stage action on Day 10. The archery team and individuals have also qualified for the quarterfinals.
