Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane of Nepal is scheduled to serve an eight-year prison sentence. The decision was issued in the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday, January 10, via a single bench presided over by judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, according to The Kathmandu Post. In addition to the sentence, Lamicchane was fined Rs. 3 lakh and instructed to reimburse the victim with Rs. 2 lakh.

The victim filed a complaint against Lamichhane in September of 2022. In August 2021, she charged the cricketer of sexual assault. On December 29, 2023, Lamichhane was ultimately found guilty of the crime following months of trial as well as investigation. It was subsequently determined that on January 10, 2024, the severity of the penalty will be disclosed.

The victim’s first assertions that she was a juvenile at that point of the incident were rejected by the court. Lamichhane, on the other hand, was taken into custody upon his arrival back from the 2022 Caribbean Premier League. The leg-spinner then filed a high court challenge against the district court’s decision to transfer Lamichhane to the Central Jail in Sundhara.

While the trial and inquiry went on, Lamicchane was not allowed to roam around freely. In addition, he was prohibited from leaving Nepal and had to notify the police ahead of time if he intended to leave Kathmandu. But Lamichhane got some short-term respite since the cricket player had won the case before the limitations were eventually overturned at the Supreme Court.

Sandeep Lamichhane – the player behind Nepal cricket’s rise?

In the mountains of Nepal, cricket is not as popular as it is in other parts of South Asia. However, it has been gaining traction; in 2018, the world governing body granted Nepal one-day international status.

Being the most highly sought-after Nepali cricket player in high-paying competitions throughout the globe was largely due to Lamichhane. The leg spinner’s big break came in 2018 when he signed with the wealthiest cricket league in the world, the Indian Premier League.
