Rohit Sharma, the skipper, chose to bat first and established the tone right away. India had a flying start, and the Kiwis found adrift from the opening over. Before gathering the ball, KL smashed the stumps. Shami also put down a sitter. In this competition, India faced trouble for the first time, but Shami made a spectacular comeback.

By getting rid of Williamson and trapping Tom Latham during the same over, he made the crucial breakthroughs. When Mitchell as well as Glenn Phillips developed a fifty partnership, New Zealand became a serious contender.
