Brendon McCullum to take charge as England’s new head coach

In what has a big development for England cricket fans, Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the new head coach of England’s Test team. The England and Wales Cricket Board took to their social media handles to share the news with the fans.

New Zealand’s former cricketer doesn’t have the experience of coaching a Test team. However, he led New Zealand’s team during his International career from 2013 till his retirement. He led New Zealand’s side in 31 Tests. Under his leadership, New Zealand won and lost 11 matches each.

Talking about his coaching role, McCullum is currently plying his trade as the head coach of the Kolkata franchise in the ongoing Indian T20 League 2022. The franchise has had a topsy-turvy campaign so far.

They will be playing their last league stage game against Lucknow on 18th March 2022. Given how they have fared so far, it’s highly unlikely that they will reach the playoffs. The New Zealand former cricketer, thus, is likely to take charge ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, due to start from 2nd June 2022.

The New Zealand‘s former captain is thrilled to take up the new role and it will be interesting to see if he could turn the fortunes around for the team in the longest format of the game.

“I’d like to say how pleased I am to be given this opportunity to positively contribute to England’s Test cricket set-up and move the team forward into a more successful era,” McCullum said in an ECB press release.

“In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we’ve confronted them head-on.

“I’ve enjoyed several robust conversations with Rob Key about the direction of travel for the team and have found his enthusiasm contagious. I’m no stranger to bringing about change within a team environment, and I can’t wait to get started.

“Ben Stokes is the perfect character to inspire change around him, and I look forward to working closely with him to build a successful unit around us.” McCullum concluded.

During his illustrious career, Brendon McCullum played 101 Tests, scoring 6453 runs at an average of 38.64.
