‘Janaaza hai bhaisaab West Indies cricket ka’ – Fans react as West Indies lose to Scotland, crash out of ODI World Cup Qualifier 2023
For the first time in ODI World Cup, West Indies won’t participate.
In the third game of the Super Six round of the ongoing ODI World Cup qualifier 2023, West Indies and Scotland took on each other. The former World Champions had no points coming into the second round as they won against now-eliminated teams in the first round. On the other hand, Scotland had two points to their name thanks to their win against Oman in the first round.
Meanwhile, in the game, the European team won the toss and elected to bowl first. They proved their decision right as the number three batter, Brendon McMullen took three wickets and Chris Sole took one in the powerplay. The two-time World Cup winners were reduced to 30/4. They started going further in the hole as they lost six wickets for 81 runs. At this stage, the likes of former skipper Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd put together 77 runs.
After their partnership was broken, the team was folded for 181 runs in 43.5 overs. For the Blue Brigade, McMollen took three wickets while Sole, Mark Watt, and Chris Greaves took two each and Safyaan Sharif took one.

In reply, the Richie Berrington-led side had a horror start as Christopher McBride lost his wicket to a full toss from Holder. However, the team managed to keep their cool as Matthew Cross and McMollen put together 125 runs for the second wicket. Both players went on to score half-centuries, ensuring that the team would win the game.
Cross scored 74 not out and took the team over the line as they won the game by seven wickets. With this win, the team has come closer to playing the final. The finalists of this tournament will qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India in October and November this year. On the other hand, the Maroon brigade is eliminated from the tournament. For the first time, they won’t play the ODI World Cup.

The 2023 World Cup in India will be the first World Cup edition without two-time champions West Indies. End of an era!
The 2023 edition will also be the first one without a former champion team taking part in it.

The West Indies didn't just lose to Scotland, they were brushed aside. The whole is a tiny fraction of the sum of the parts now. I hope every player is looking within rather than sideways because while I am overjoyed for Scotland, the West Indies lost rather substantially to…

I love West Indies
I love West Indian cricket
I still believe they can be the No.1 team in world cricket!— Gautam Gambhir (@GautamGambhir) July 1, 2023
West Indies are out of the World Cup. Even though it isn’t surprising…given how their standards have fallen in the last few years…it’s still a little disappointing to see the erstwhile champions of cricket to become a spectator for a world event.
