‘Demolished’: Twitter erupts after Delhi annihilate Punjab in a crushing win

Delhi defeated Punjab convincingly in the 32nd match of the Indian T20 League 2022 by 7 wickets with 57 deliveries remaining in the match.

Delhi and Punjab locked horns in the 32nd game of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Delhi’s skipper, Rishabh Pant won the toss and asked the opposition to bat first. Punjab had a blazing start to their innings as they scored 27 runs in the first three overs. Shikhar Dhawan was the first wicket to fall for them when the team’s score was 33 in 3.4 overs.

Dhawan’s opening partner and skipper Mayank Agarwal (24) followed in the next over as he got played down against Mustafizur Rahman. In form Liam Livingstone (2), was stumped by Pant off Axar Patel in the last over of the powerplay. These wickets triggered a collapse as they struggled to build substantial partnerships.

In the seventh over, Jonny Bairstow (9) pulled a short ball against Khaleel Ahmed and was taken at deep fine leg. At 54/4, the likes of Jitesh Sharma (32 off 23)  and Sharukh Khan tried to steady the innings as they stitched a 31 runs partnership. But Jitesh Sharma was dismissed in the 13th over, when Punjab’s score was 85 runs. This wicket led to a collapse as they lost the last five wickets for just 30 runs. Punjab could only manage 115 runs losing all their wickets form 20 overs. Delhi’s bowling unit was on song as Khaleel Ahmed, Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each.

In reply, the Men in Blue and Red openers, David Warner and Prithvi Shaw came out with an intent to finish the game as quickly as possible. They scored 83 runs for the first wicket in just 6.3 overs. Shaw scored an explosive 41 off 20 balls including seven fours and a six. On the other hand, in form, Warner scored an unbeaten 60 off 30 balls including 10 fours and a six. This helped the team chase down the target in just 10.3 overs with nine wickets in hand.

With this win, Delhi has now won three games out of six and has a Net Run Rate (NRR) of (0.942). They are now sitting at the sixth position in the points table.
