‘Can’t expect great fielding from R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami’ – Former India captain’s brutal take on team India

Published on

India lost their crucial encounter in the clash against South Africa on October 30, Sunday and it was their fielding that hurt them a lot in the match. From Virat Kohli dropping a sitter to Rohit Sharma missing a run-out, the Men in Blue were subpar in their fielding on the day.

The former Indian cricketer, Ajay Jadeja, who took cognizance of India’s inconsistency in fielding, said that the team under Kohli was physically fit and added that the current team under Rohit looks unfit as the captain is not concerned about the same.

“Who are the fielders we have? We have Ashwin and Shami. In terms of bowling, these two are great but you can’t expect good fielding from them. When you pick a team, you know what you want and I think Team India has not given much attention to their fielding,” Jadeja was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Will India address fielding concerns?

As it stands, the Men in Blue are in a position to clinch a win against Bangladesh on Wednesday and it remains to see if the team would address the fielding concerns. Further, Ashwin, who struggled to come up with the right lengths the other day, might be dropped on the back of his subpar performances.

Rohit, the team India captain who admitted to poor fielding after the match, said that the team would look to move on from the defeat and added that they will keep learning. “We expected that the pitch will have something in it. We knew that there’ll be a lot of help for the seamers, that’s why it wasn’t an easy target to chase. We fell a little short with the bat. We fought well, but South Africa were better,” Rohit said after the defeat in the post-match interview.

“We were a little poor in the field, we gave so many chances and we weren’t clinical. We were just not good enough. The last two games, we were pretty good in the field. We couldn’t hold our chances, we missed a few run-outs. We need to keep our heads high and take a learning from this game,” said Rohit further.
