Australia overcame the spirited Bangladesh side by eight wickets during their final ODI World Cup 2023 league stage clash. The Aussies have already qualified for the knockouts, and on the other hand, Bangladesh is at the bottom of the table. Batting first Bangladesh scored 306/8 with Towhid Hridoy scoring a half-century. Australia gave rest to Mitchell Starc and made way for pacer Sean Abbott. Mitchell Marsh scored a brilliant century in the last match.
After being invited to bat first Bangladesh started off well as the openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das stitched a partnership of 76 runs. The top five batters each made at least 30 but could not convert them into big scores. Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa picked two wickets each for the side.
Glenn Maxwell who was the hero of the last match was also rested as they have already qualified for the semi-final. The batter single-handedly won the match against Afghanistan as he scored a double hundred in the tournament and became the first batter to achieve so in the marquee event.
Mitchell Marsh shines in last game
Hridoy was the highest run scorer for his side as the batter scored 74 runs. Shakib Al Hasan was also missing from the last game due to injury. Najumul Hasan Shanto was the second-highest run-scorer with 45 runs. With some runs by Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan Miraz at the end, they posted a good target of 307 runs for the five-time champions.
In response, David Warner and Travis Head did not give them a good start as the latter was dismissed on 10 runs. The former who has been in good form in the mega event, scored another half-century. He scored 53 runs and built a partnership with Marsh. The latter was unbeaten till the end scoring 177 runs off 132 balls hitting 17 fours and 9 sixes.
Steve Smith also got his first half-century and was unbeaten with 63 runs. Marsh was named the man of the match for his blistering knock. He said, “It feels great. Obviously nice to chase this total down. Now, onto the semis. (On shifting down to No.3) I sort of knew that when Head came back in, I would go down to 3.”
