‘Aisi kismat kisi ko na mille’ – Fans react as Angelo Matthews gets timed out; Know More about the MCC ‘Timed out’ rule

Sri Lanka are currently batting first in their ODI World Cup 2023 encounter against Bangladesh.

Angelo Matthews

Angelo Mathews, batter from Sri Lanka, was “timed out” in a significant moment during his team’s match against Bangladesh on Monday in Delhi, during the ODI World Cup 2023. Shakib al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, delivered the second delivery during the 25th over, when the event occurred.

When the fourth wicket fell, Angelo Mathews had just been removed and was coming to the crease. However, confusion quickly ensued when Mathews recognised he was wearing the incorrect helmet and argued his case to the umpires and the Bangladeshi players. In the long history of international cricket, Angelo Mathews is the very first player to be timed out.

Six cricket players were timed out during first-class cricket prior to this. Hemulal Yadav of India is among the hitters on the list who were timed out under the rules.

It was evident from the footage that he was signalling that the helmet belt had fallen loose. But by then, the harm had already been done. The Sri Lankan team substitute ran wearing the appropriate helmet. However, Bangladesh had already requested a “timed out” by that point.

Despite Angelo Mathews’ passionate pleas to Shakib al Hasan and the umpires, the appeal had not been dropped. Following his discharge, Angelo Mathews was furious and immediately tossed away his helmet out of anger.

What does the MCC ‘Timed Out’ rule state?

The Timed Out rule acknowledges the fact that, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

The ODI World Cup 2023 playing conditions also state that, “40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
