The fifth Ashes Test will be veteran England fast bowler Stuart Broad’s last game of international cricket, concluding a distinguished career in which he became only the second fast bowler to take more than 600 wickets in the format. Only behind his longstanding friend and pace partner James Anderson, Broad will finish his career as England’s second-highest Test wicket-taker.
The veteran England pacer said that the coming Sunday or Monday may be his last game of cricket after the end of the third day’s play on Saturday. Broad even recalled his days in cricket and also expressed his feeling that he always wanted to finish on top. Moreover, it was also claimed that Broad was teary-eyed while communicating his retirement decision.
“It has been a wonderful ride. A huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England batch as much as I have. I am loving cricket as much as I ever had, it has been such a wonderful series to be a part of and I have always wanted to finish on the top. This series feels like one of the most enjoyable entertainments I’ve been a part of,” he said speaking to Sky Sports.
Broad has taken overall 845 wickets in 167 Test matches, 121 One Day Internationals, and 56 T20 Internationals to date. At the Oval, England will try to keep Australia from defeating them for the first time since 2001.
Broad will be ending his career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in Test history. The 37-year-old made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007 and will go down as one of cricket’s all-time greatest fast bowlers. The 2010 T20 World Cup and four Ashes series victories are among the accolades the Nottinghamshire bowler leaves behind in the world of international cricket. From being hit for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh, Broad has certainly come a long way in international cricket.
