Star India batter Shubman Gill broke his 12-inning dry spell by securing his third Test century in the 2nd Test against England at VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Gill’s century came in 132 balls and featured 11 fours and two sixes, showcasing his versatility as a batter. It also came when the team was in need after losing four wickets for 122 runs.

The last time Gill hit a Test century was in March 2023 against Australia in Ahmedabad, where he scored 128 runs. However, in the subsequent 12 innings, he struggled to make an impact, managing only 197 runs at an average of 17.9. This century in Visakhapatnam marked a crucial return to form for Gill, boosting his confidence.

Gill’s debut Test century came in 2022 against Bangladesh in Chattogram, where he notched up 110 runs. Notably, he became the first Indian to achieve a Test century at number three in India since 2017. The 24-year-old had taken on the role of batting at number three since the West Indies tour, playing five Tests before the Visakhapatnam match.

However, his performances in those tests were inconsistent, with scores of 6, 10, 29*, 2, 26, 36, 10, 23, 0, and 34. This recent century is expected to play a significant role in helping him regain his form and confidence.

Shoaib Bashir dismisses Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill’s innings in Visakhapatnam came to an end when he attempted a reverse sweep against left-arm spinner Shoaib Bashir, resulting in a catch by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. Despite this dismissal, Gill’s century played a crucial role in India’s innings.

It’s worth noting that Gill’s luck also played a role in the early stages of his innings when he was given out LBW to Tom Hartley. However, a review revealed a faint edge on the ball before it hit his pads, saving him from an early departure.

Meanwhile, India is currently struggling to score runs as the hosts have lost six wickets for 227 runs. Allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin and wicketkeeper-batter K Sikar Bharat are in the middle, trying to build the innings again. India is currently leading with 370 runs at the end of session 2 on Day 3.
