Real Madrid, the reigning Copa del Rey champions, were eliminated from the competition on Thursday, January 18, after losing 4-2 to Atletico Madrid after 120 minutes.
In the eleventh minute, Jude Bellingham hit the crossbar and nearly gave Los Blancos the lead. In the twenty-first minute, Atleti custodian Jan Oblak had to make two saves due to the threat posed by Carlo Ancelotti’s team. Brazilian defender Samuel Lino gave the home team the lead during the 39th minute, overcoming Real Madrid’s early assault. The 24-year-old scored the first goal for Diego Simeone’s team after taking advantage of a weak header from Antonio Rudiger.
But in the 45+1st minute, Oblak erased all of Ancelotti’s hard work, and his team were level at halftime. Due to Luka Modric’s risky free-kick, which caused a lot of issues for the Slovenian, he collided into Saul Niguez and inadvertently pushed the ball into his net.
Alvaro Morata gave Atleti the lead again in the 57th minute, but more disaster struck. Andriy Lunin, the keeper for Real Madrid, dropped his head in humiliation this time. Morata, the former Los Blancos striker, was able to get the shot in from close range after the Ukrainian deflected the ball into his defender’s shin, making the score 2-1.
In the 78th minute, Lunin somewhat atoned for his subpar goalkeeping by keeping his team in the contest. In the 81st minute, he made a superb stop to put Antoine Griezmann at bay. These would turn out to be crucial stops as Joselu scored an equaliser for Real Madrid on the opposite end. After Vinicius and Bellingham connected on a superb counterattack, he finished it off, and the Spanish attacker headed in a dramatic equaliser.
Atheltico and Griezmann seal ET win over Real Madrid
In the 100th minute, Griezmann scored the most important goal following a blunder by Vinicius. The Frenchman dashed down the right wing as the Brazilian lost control of the ball. He slid into the box and then crashed at an acute angle onto the net’s ceiling.
In the 119th minute, Rodrigo Riquelme sealed Atleti’s spot in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. The Spanish winger knocked Los Blancos away with a beautiful finish after connecting alongside Memphis Depay in the attack.
