Afghan trio to face harsh sanctions after declining central contracts

In a decision which has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is on the verge of implementing a harsh two-year ban on No Objection Certificates (NOCs) on star players Mujeeb ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Naveen ul Haq. This drastic move stems from the trio’s request to be released from their annual central contracts, prompting an investigation and a subsequent recommendation from the Board’s special committee. The ACB cites its commitment to national duty as the driving force behind this potential sanction. The situation unravels a complex web of player aspirations, financial realities, and the ever-growing influence of the lucrative franchise League.

Central contracts signify the backbone of national cricket teams. This provides a financial safety net and fosters loyalty towards the national cause. For a developing cricketing nation like Afghanistan, these contracts are even more crucial, offering stability and attracting promising talent to the fold. However, the emergence of high-paying T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League has presented players with a lucrative alternative, often dwarfing the sum offered by their national boards.

The ACB, understandably, views the players’ decision as a disregard for national pride and commitment. “The three players formally communicated their decision to the ACB, expressing their desire to release themselves from the annual central contract, starting from 1st January 2024, as well as requested to consider their consent for their participation in the national events,” an official statement released by the board said.

Harsh repercussions in line

As a result, the ACB’s special committee came up with the following recommendations in a bid to deal with the issue:

Central Contracts Suspension: Effective January 1, 2024, the three players will be ineligible for central contracts for one year. ACB will determine their participation in events on a case-by-case basis during this period.

No Objection Certificate Restriction: For two years, the players will be considered ineligible for No Objection Certificates (NOCs) permitting them to play in foreign leagues. All currently issued NOCs will be revoked immediately.

Transparency: ACB will transparently communicate its position to the cricketing community, including the Apex Cricket Council, the Australia Cricket Board, member countries/cricket boards, and the Afghan public.
