Punjab and Hyderabad faced each other at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This was the 70th and last game of the league stage. This game didn’t have any stakes as both sides were already eliminated from the playoffs race after Bangalore beat Gujarat earlier this week. In this dead rubber, the 2016-winners won the toss and chose to bat first. Their innings couldn’t get going as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
They only managed to get to 157/8 in their innings. The likes of Abhishek Sharma (43), Rahul Tripathi (20), and Aiden Markram (21) got starts, but couldn’t convert them into big scores. Players such as Washington Sundar (25) and Romario Shepherd (26*) took the team to a respectable total after they were tottering at 96/5. Five players such as Priyam Garg (4), Nicholas Pooran (5), Jagadeesha Suchith (0), skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1), and Umran Mail couldn’t cross the double-digit mark.
For the Mayank Agarwal-led side, Harpreet Brar and Nathan Ellis took three wickets each while Kagiso Rabada took one. In reply, the 2014-finalists batted the way they have been doing this entire season, i.e. taking the aggressive route from ball one. Their opener, Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan, provided a great by scoring 28 runs in the first three overs. The former was clean bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi in the last ball of the third over. Shahrukh Khan was promoted to number three to keep the scoreboard going at a high pace.
Khan scored 10-ball 19 before getting out to the pace sensation Umran Malik. On the other hand, Dhawan scored a steady 32-ball 39 before becoming the second wicket of Farooqi. Skipper Mayank Agarwal’s poor form with the bat continued in this game as he could score only one run. Wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma played a handy cameo, and scored a seven-ball 19. On the other hand, Liam Livingstone scored an unbeaten 22-ball 49 hitting five sixes and two fours.
As a matter of fact, one of the sixes led to the 2022 edition registering over 1000 sixes in the tournament. The previous highest was 872 sixes, in the 2018 season. Meanwhile, Livingstone’s innings helped the team to win the game by five wickets. Thus, the Punjab-based franchise chased their total with 29 balls to spare.
