‘Dar ka mahol in PCB’ – Fans react as Sri Lanka Board sacked by Government due to humiliating performance in CWC23

Sri Lanka will face New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in their last league game.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board

Amid the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, the Sri Lankan government has taken strict action against their cricket board. According to the latest news reports, the government has sacked the entire Cricket Board for the team’s poor performance in the ongoing tournament. The decision came in the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s 302-run loss against the hosts, India.

The executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has been suspended by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe following an audit report on the conduct of the board officials during last year’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia. “They should voluntarily resign,” he said while accusing the board of corruption and traitors.

“Sri Lanka Cricket has been besieged with complaints of player disciplinary issues, management corruption, financial misconduct, and match-fixing allegations. I would like to emphasise that interim measures will only be taken to establish good governance principles”, Ranasinghe said in the letters.

Sri Lanka faces a public protest against the cricket team

Amid public discontent over Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the ongoing World Cup in India, the board’s suspension has been announced. Mohan de Silva, the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, stepped down, followed by the sacking of the remaining board members by the minister. An interim committee chaired by World Cup-winning former captain Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointed in their place, as per the ministry’s statement.

He will be joined by three former Supreme Court judges on the committee. It’s worth noting that Sri Lanka will need to win their last league game to continue in the race for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Teams that finish in the top 8 of the ongoing tournament will qualify for the tournament. The event will take place in Pakistan in 2025. The team will face New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
