England won the toss and decided to bat first on a good batting pitch at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore against Sri Lanka. A dismal batting display from the reigning winners. While the surface wasn’t particularly good, it also wasn’t a bowler’s dream come true.
It says a lot that England was all out with nearly 17 overs remaining. With the exception of Ben Stokes, neither of the other England batters had the will to compete. Though he didn’t damage Sri Lanka much, Jonny Bairstow was fortunate not to go out LBW on the opening ball.
Although Dawid Malan had a nice appearance, he fell victim to Angelo Mathews’ cunning. Jos Buttler tossed it aside as Joe Root ran himself out. For a few overs, Moeen Ali and Stokes kept the ship afloat before Mathews struck once again. After being left with the bowlers, the latter too failed to hit the big shot.
From the beginning, Sri Lanka was spot on, with the loss of the toss being their lone setback. Given that Mathews as well as Lahiru Kumara were two of the game’s best bowlers, their selections were excellent. In this game, Kusal Mendis was outstanding as captain as well.
Sri Lanka chase down easy total to worsen England problems
In response, there was a short glimmer of optimism as David Willey claimed a pair of wickets along with the new ball. This is due to the fact that Pathum Nissanka as well as Sadeera Samarawickrama sealed the door entirely, despite Sri Lanka being reduced to 23/2.
Samarawickrama scored his second fifty of the event, while Nissanka scored his fourth in a row. Following this setback, England dropped to ninth place in the standings, with very slim prospects.
Despite being their greatest asset, England’s batting is failing them repeatedly as no one can build on a strong start to get an enormous number of runs. On the other side, Sri Lanka has won two consecutive after suffering three straight losses, and they would like to continue winning from this point forward.
