India players won their gold medal match against Afghanistan on the basis of having a higher ranking

After the final match versus Afghanistan was abandoned due to persistent rain on Saturday (October 7), the Indian men’s cricket side won the gold medal in their first appearance in the Asian Games.

Due to their better ranking in the tournament, the team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad was deemed the victor. At the Hangzhou Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field, play in the summit match was suspended due to persistent rain when Afghanistan were 112/5 at 18.2 overs. The match was never resumed after that point.

In a video released on Instagram by leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, the Indian cricket team seemed ecstatic upon winning the gold medal.

Once the Indian national anthem was sung in Hangzhou at the men’s cricket competition’s medal ceremony, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad became a bit emotional. At this massive tournament, men’s cricket has appeared three times, and each time Afghanistan has taken home a silver medal.

Asian Games 2022 cricket competition

The four Asian Games 2023 semifinalists were Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, as well as Afghanistan. India triumphed against Bangladesh, and Afghanistan defeated Pakistan. Bangladesh and Pakistan competed for the bronze medal whereas India and Afghanistan fought it out in the final game.

Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 65 runs within just five overs in a game hampered by rain to win the bronze medal. Rakibul Hasan, hit a boundary after Bangladesh required four runs off the final ball in a nail-biting thriller. Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by six wickets, sending them home empty-handed.

Earlier, the Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka in the Asian Games 2022 final match to claim the gold medal. With a total of 107 medals won at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, consisting of 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze, India set a new record.
