In the opening match of the ODI World Cup 2023, England won the toss against New Zealand. They elected to bat first as Jonny Bairstow was initially looking strong. But Mitchell Santner demonstrated how changing speed can result in wickets.
He teased hitters with a very beautiful spell before getting Bairstow. When taking on Ravindra, Brook was menacing, but one too many shots in the same over left him caught at deep mid-wicket. When Phillips was unexpectedly substituted, Moeen gave away his own wicket with a subpar hit. Henry was introduced because Buttler was already a serious danger. Buttler attempted to play well but pinched off as the short third man was flung wide.
The final two batsmen were at the crease as wickets began to fall one after the other. Their critical 30-run final wicket partnership has enabled England to reach a respectable total of 282. England has a range of bowlers that may help them on a surface that is undoubtedly on the slower side. It appears that both of these teams will provide another low-scoring show similar to the one they provided four years ago.
Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway help NZ take revenge over England
The defending champions, England, have been batted and bowled by an unbroken 273-run stand. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra launched a brilliant offensive with the help of numerous boundaries.
Nobody anticipated England to appear this bad despite not having some big names in their line-up. However, Conway and Ravindra just destroyed the bowlers. Using the new ball, Chris Woakes gave up runs, and Sam Curran’s first two overs also included a wicket. Mark Wood went 200+ yards to the boundary despite bowling 150+ overs.
Whoever England had, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, both the left-handers took them. They were crucial in setting up a record stand. Due to Kane Williamson’s injury, Ravindra was given the opportunity to play at No. 3, and he did well. There will surely be some different kinds of selection headaches in both the camps after such an enthralling game.
This is not just a win, this is an annihilation. You just have to love New Zealand. What a wonderful start of World cup 2023 in India. Long live ODI cricket.
