Chennai’s run in the Indian T20 League 2022 has been not up to the expectations. They lost six of their first eight matches and their chances of making it to the playoffs virtually ended. Although mathematically Chennai making it to the top four seems possible it is far-fetched in the current situation.
However, what few possibilities are left requires Chennai to win their remaining matches with big margins. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni’s side put up a near-perfect performance against Delhi in the last match and kept their playoff hopes alive.
In the match against Delhi, Chennai batters up a brilliant show and posted a huge total of 208 runs from their 20 overs. The foundation of the big total was laid by the opener Devon Conway (87 of 49). MS Dhoni (21 of 8) and Shivam Dube (32 of 19) capitalized on the strong foundation and played fiery little cameos and took Chennai to the formidable total. The bowlers continued the brilliant show as they bundled Delhi for 117 runs. The Men in Yellow won the match by 91 runs and gave a great boost to their net run rate.
After their emphatic win over Delhi, the Chennai skipper, MS Dhoni called it a ‘perfect’ performance. He also said that even if his team does not make it to the top four that is not the end of the world. MSD spoke about enjoying the tournament and not putting undue pressure on oneself while other teams are playing.
“It would have been better if we could have had a win like this somewhere early. It was a perfect game. If we make the playoffs, great. But even if we don’t it’s not the end of the world,â€- MS Dhoni said during the post-match presentation. Notably, Chennai’s qualification not only requires them to win their remaining matches, but it also depends on the results of other matches. However, Dhoni seemed unfazed about these calculations.
“I am not a big fan of maths. Even in school, I wasn’t good at it. Thinking of the net run rate doesn’t help. You just want to enjoy the ITL. When two other teams are playing, you don’t want to be under pressure and thinking. You just have to think about what to do in the next game,â€-Dhoni added.
