Chennai and Delhi locked horns in the 55th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The 2020 finalists won the toss and chose to bowl first. Little did they know the wrath their bowlers will face from the Chennai batters. Openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad provided a great start with a partnership of 110 runs in 11 overs.
Gaikwad (41) was the first one to go as he was taken at midwicket by Axar Patel off Anrich Nortje. Conway scored 87 off 49 balls before he was caught behind by Rishabh Pant off Khaleel Ahmed trying to play the ramp shot. Shivam Dube, who came out to bat after Gaikwad’s wicket, scored a fiery 32 off 19 balls including two sixes and as many fours.
He was caught at long-off by David Warner off Mitchell Marsh. Skipper MS Dhoni turned back the clock for the fans as he scored an unbeaten 21 off eight and took the team to a mammoth 208/6. Talking about Delhi’s bowling, Nortje took three wickets but concede 42 runs in four overs. Ahmed was economical with a spell of 4-0-28-2 while Marsh took a solitary wicket conceding 34 runs in three overs.
In reply, the Men In Blue and Red had a poor start. Srikar Bharat (8) was caught at slips by Moeen Ali off Simarjeet Singh trying to play the pull shot. Three overs later, the team dealt with a big blow as Warner (19) was trapped lbw by Maheesh Theekshana. Marsh (25) and Pant tried to steady the innings with a partnership of 36 runs. However, it was cut short as the former was caught at long-on by Gaikwad off Ali. Pant (21) followed two overs later as he chopped onto the stumps facing Ali.
The duo’s wicket triggered a collapse for the team. From 72/2, they went to 117 all-out in 17.4 overs. Shardul Thakur scored 24 off 19 balls whereas others got out without crossing the double-digit mark. Seven batters from the team couldn’t cross the double digit-mark.
