Lucknow and Kolkata played each other at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. After winning the toss, the two-time winners chose to bowl first. Lucknow’s innings was topsy-turvy, to say the least. After their skipper, KL Rahul’s wicket in the first over, Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda played the rescue act. They then kept the run-scoring going on, and took the aggressive route.
However, Their wickets in the space of five overs meant that the scoring rate came down significantly. Vice-captain Krunal Pandya and Ayush Badoni struggled with the bat as well. However, the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Jason Holder took the team to 176/7, which was considered a fighting total given the kind of situation they were in after losing the wickets of de Kock and Hooda.
Talking about Kolkata’s bowling, Andre Russell took two wickets while Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, and Shivam Mavi took one each. Russell, Narine, and Southee were economical with the ball, while Mavi, Anukul Roy, and Harshit Rana proved costly. In reply, the Shreyas Iyer-led side kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Only Aaron Finch (14), Andre Russell (45), and Sunil Narine (22) could cross the double-digit mark.
Talking about Lucknow’s bowlers, they were relentless in their approach. Avesh Khan and Jason Holder took three wickets each although the latter proved costly. Holder’s economy rate was 12.40 which was predominantly due to the explosive innings of Andre Russell. Uncapped Indian left-arm pacer, Mohsin Khan had superb returns with 3-1-6-1. Dushmantha Chameera was also superb as he only gave 14 runs in his full quota of four overs, and picked a wicket as well.
Avesh Khan had the best spell for the Men In Mint Green with 3-1-19-1. These performances led to Kolkata being all-out for 101 in 14.3 overs and thus, losing the game by 75 runs. With this loss, the last season’s finalists are highly unlikely to feature in the playoffs. On the other hand, Lucknow have possibly joined Gujarat in the playoffs as both teams now have 16 points each in the season.
