In the morning session of Day 5 in the final Test of Ashes 2023, Chris Woakes’ dismissals of the openers gave England the upper hand. Warner caused the edge by nibbling the ball away late, but he got caught behind with a peach. Khawaja was caught lbw once again after missing a delivery of a longer length and being struck in the front of the middle and leg.
The disappointing Ashes 2023 campaign of Marnus Labuschagne came to a predictable conclusion when he edged one against Mark Wood that slanted in and nibbled away. With a 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Steve Smith and Travis Head, however, immediately brought the game for Australia. Both batters displayed strong resistance while also scoring some crucial boundaries to put England at bay.
Rain forced the second session as a whole to be called off. However, England completely dominated the final session of a fantastic Ashes series. On a tossed-up ball that swung through the rough and grabbed the edge going to the way to slip, Moeen broke Head’s resistance for 43. With yet another flash of genius, Woakes defeated Smith. Smith could barely nick the delivery as the England bowler got one to nip back from the seam in the corridor of uncertainty.
The next victim came when Australia’s innings broke down: Mitchell Marsh. The batter inside-edged the ball into his pads after Moeen caused another pitch to spin violently. Due to a weak stroke, Mitchell Starc was bowled by Woakes and grabbed in the slip cordon. Australia had fallen to 275/7 from 238/3 during lunch, and Pat Cummins, who got dismissed early, could not save his team.
The fairytale ending for Stuart Broad in his final Test match
However, Australia’s middle order didn’t give up, as Todd Murphy and Alex Carey contributed 35 for the ninth wicket. A superb delivery by Stuart Broad that slipped away and curved in towards off was produced. Murphy could only squeeze it over to the keeper because the delivery seemed too good for him.
By taking the final wicket, Broad capably ended the Test, a brilliant series, and an exceptional career. In the usual manner, he endured Carey to a caught behind by generating an edge of a testing ball outside off stump. He ended his Test career with a fitting victory against his country’s arch-rivals on the biggest stage of them all.
After winning, England tied the thrilling series 2-2. Australia kept the urn, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to defeat England in the Ashes series.
