The franchise has done it again, MI New York won the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) after beating Seattle Orcas by seven wickets in the final on Monday, July 31. With the bat, the stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran shined, scoring a stunning 137* in just 55 balls. But due to the MLC’s unofficial T20 status, this innings will not be recorded in his records.
The Apex Cricket Council has not given the tournament official T20 status because it was staged in the USA, an Associate Member country. It’s noteworthy to note that the Apex cricket council has sanctioned the MLC, but regrettably, the six-team competition hasn’t been given the crucial T20 status, unlike well-known events like the Abu Dhabi T10 League, US Masters T10 League, Global T20 Canada, and ILT20. This shouldn’t detract from Nicholas Pooran’s lightning-quick knock, which lit the stage on fire.
The MI New York (MINY) won the toss and elected to bowl first. After being put into bat the Seattle Orcas (SEO) set a target of 184 runs. SEO scored 183/9 in 20 overs thanks to opener Quinton de Kock’s 87 runs off 52 balls, which included nine fours and four sixes. Trent Boult and Rashid Khan each got three wickets for MINY during this time.
Captain Pooran leading from the front
However, the match will be known for the heroics of Captain Pooran, who smashed 10 fours and 13 sixes and reached the three-figure milestone in just 40 balls. In the top match, Pooran filled in for the regular skipper Kieron Pollard, who was out due to injury, and the MI brand gained another championship to its collection. But one should not forget the spell initial spell from Trent Boult and Rashid Khan who registered a spell of 3/34 and 3/9 in their allocated four overs respectively.
For this valiant effort, Pooran was awarded Player of the Match as well as Cameron Gannon was awarded Player of the Tournament awards which is indeed a good achievement for the Australian. Here let us look at some of the Tweets from fans;
