The Ashes 2023 is at its concluding stages as the final Test is already underway at the Oval, London. The visitors have already retained the Ashes Urn for the fourth consecutive time and are eyeing their first Test series win in England since 2001. England, on the other hand, would want to restrict Australia from winning the Ashes. The best outcome for them is a draw following the rain interruptions in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. The test ended in a draw and the hosts lost their chance to turn the scoreline around in their favour. Notably, Australia won the first two Tests of the series to gain a two-game advantage early on in the series.
On Day 3 of the final Test, England players interchanged their shirts in a shocking move. However, it was later revealed that this was done to highlight the confusion caused due to dementia. The final Ashes 2023 Test hangs in the balance on Day 3
The final Ashes Test has been a package full of surprises. Given the form in which England were progressing after suffering early set-backs in the series, getting dismissed after scoring just 283 runs in the first innings was quite unexpected. Harry Brook top-scored with 85 off 91 while Ben Duckett with 41 off 41 remained the second-highest scorer for England. Mitchell Starc remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/82 in 14.4 overs.
In reply, Australia exhibited similar gameplay. Steve Smith with 71 off 123 remained the top scorer for the visitors while opener Usman Khawaja followed him with 47 off 157. Handy contributions down the order by Pat Cummins (36 off 86) and Todd Murphy (34 off 39) took the score to 295 before being bundled out by English bowlers. They managed a 12-run lead. Chris Woakes with 3/61 remained the best bowler for England. The home team are currently 98/1 after 20 overs of play in their second innings.
