The stage is all set for the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League to go underway on the 31st of March. Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat will take on MS Dhoni’s Chennai at the former’s home ground, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in the curtain raiser.
Ahead of the start of the tournament, the captains of all the teams were gathered in Ahmedabad for the unveiling of the trophy. While captains of all the other teams were present at the event, Mumbai was a no-show. Rohit Sharma was the only one missing from the photos of all the captains that have been doing rounds on the internet.
Fans on Twitter were left puzzled as the most successful captain in the tournament’s history was missing from the frame. Some even speculated that the Indian skipper was in Ahmedabad but did not show up as he had an upset stomach.
In the meantime, there have been many speculations that the Mumbai skipper will sit out of the Playing XI for a few matches this season for workload management. In his absence, India’s rising sensation Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue and Gold.
It’s all up to the franchises now: Rohit Sharma on workload management in the Indian T20 League
When asked about his availability in the first few matches during Mumbai’s press conference on Wednesday, Rohit dodged the question. Mark Boucher, the team’s coach, was also present with the captain. When Rohit was asked whether he will rest, he said, “I will leave it to Mark (Boucher)”. To this, the team’s coach Boucher added, “If he (Rohit) wants rest will give him”.
Speaking about the workload management in the Indian T20 League, Rohit said, “It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen.”
