India skipper Rohit Sharma is set to lead India in the Test Championship finals and 50-over World Cup later this year. Before the commencement of marquee events, Rohit will lead Mumbai in the 16th season of the Indian T20 League. Mumbai skipper will look to change the fate of the team which finished 10th on the points table last year. Ahead of the tournament, Rohit will also need to manage his workload to be fully prepared for the Test Championship which is scheduled just a week after ITL 2023 finals.
India’s skipper setting an example is most likely to miss some games in the latter half of the tournament to be ready for the finals of a multinational event. It is being reported that if Mumbai starts well in the season, then skipper Rohit can pick and choose the matches he wants to play. This can also happen with some other players who want to participate and be fit for the upcoming national duty.
Notably, after the ODI series against Australia Rohit has stressed the preparations for the Test Championship. Rohit has said that it’s up to players to manage their workload and be fully fit for national duty. In post series of press conferences, Rohit also spoke about how national team management will look into it.
He said, “It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen, but.”
Suryakumar Yadav set to lead Mumbai
In a news report, Indian Express reported that in absence of Rohit Sharma star India batter Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team. He is being looked after as Rohit’s successor by the franchise. However, Rohit will travel with the team but will pick and choose games he wants to play and not. Though, he will support and lead Surya from the dugout.
Notably, India is set to play against Australia in the finals of the Test Championship at the Oval cricket ground from June 7. The team will look to win their first multinational trophy after 10 years. India is also set to host ODI World Cup later this year in October-November. Ahead of the marquee event, India will also be playing Asia Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Keeping these things in mind Rohit’s decision to pick and choose games in Indian T20 League. Mumbai is set to square off against Bangalore on April 2 to start its campaign in the tournament. Meanwhile, fans react to the news report of Rohit taking a rest during the Indian T20 League. A Twitter user said, “Captain Sharma is leading from the front.”
