Shreyas Iyer, India’s middle-order batter and Kolkata’s captain in the Indian T20 League, is expected to have back surgery, according to sources. Iyer, who has been sidelined since the final day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, is expected to have surgery in either London or India under the strict supervision of the Indian Cricket Board.

According to sources, Iyer was advised to undergo surgery during his third meeting with a Mumbai-based doctor. According to sources, Iyer will be out of action for at least five months following his surgery, which means he will miss high-profile tournaments such as the Test Championship Final against Australia and the Indian T20 League, which begins on March 31.

Iyer’s injury is the third major setback for India, who have been without Jasprit Bumrah due to back problems since the 20-20 World Cup in 2022. The status of Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery is unknown, but he will not be rushed back to fitness as India did in 2022. Rishabh Pant is also out of cricketing action after having suffered an accident in December 2022. His injuries could take up to a year to completely heal.

Iyer’s absence will have significant ramifications for Indian T20 League franchise Kolkata, which purchased Iyer for a whopping Rs 12.25 crores and named him captain in 2022. With less than ten days left in the tournament, Kolkata will have to scramble for another batter and a captain.

Iyer’s issues with his backing are not new. The batter missed the first Border Gavaskar Trophy Test match but was in the playing XI for the second Test match in Delhi. Iyer had stated at the time that he was fully fit and that his back problems were behind him.
