Kai Havertz, according to Chelsea legend Pat Nevin, completely threatened Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League Round of 16 clash on Tuesday. Havertz, 23, was the match-winning hero for the Blues on Tuesday night in a Champions League thriller.
Chelsea trailed 1-0 on aggregate going into last night’s game at Stamford Bridge, but they won it 2-0 in the first half to advance to the quarterfinals. Given the number of chances they created, Raheem Sterling‘s first goal tied the game, which Graham Potter’s team richly earned. Havertz’s penalty ensured Chelsea’s advancement in the Champions League in the second half, but he faced pressure from a retaken penalty after missing the first one.
Chelsea came back from one goal behind from first leg to win 2-1 on aggregate
Nevin enjoyed the overall contribution from Havertz this week on the Champions League stage. He highlighted the fact that the Dortmund defence had a lot of trouble keeping up with Chelsea’s attacker’s movements.
After losing 1-0 to Dortmund in the away leg, the Blues bounced back with two goals at home to beat the German club 2-1 on aggregate. Raheem Sterling netted in the 43rd minute, while Kai Haverts converted from the spot in the 53rd minute to double the lead for the London club. Chelsea’s win is largely surprising because they won the game against the run of play after conceding the lion’s share of possession to the visitors. Secondly, Chelsea has not been consistent this season, whereas Dortmund has enjoyed a remarkable season with long winning streaks.
Yet, Havertz, Sterling, and Joao Felix moved quite fluidly as a front three in the attack. The team from London put on the kind of performance that makes everyone realise just how much individual talent the club actually possesses. Still, they might need a few more steady displays to silence their sceptics moving forward in the season.
Here’s how fans reacted to Chelsea’s commanding victory:
