A couple of high-profile franchises, including Chennai and Gujarat, have declined to bid for a team in the upcoming Women’s Indian T20 League, according to a report, while about a half-dozen franchises have formally submitted expressions of interest.

According to Cricbuzz, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Bangalore showed up with bid documents on the day of the technical bids for the Women’s Indian T20 League. However, Chennai and Gujarat decided not to pursue a Women’s team.

Furthermore, the Lucknow team is thought to have stayed away, but there was no immediate confirmation on the Punjab team. However, according to the report, the Punjab side was also at the designated venue with the bid papers.

According to previous reports, the day of submission of papers demonstrating credentials was Monday (January 23). Those who meet the Indian Cricket Board’s criteria will be eligible to participate in the financial bidding, which will take place on Wednesday. The key requirement is a net worth of Rs 1000 crore.

A Chennai official confirmed the decision, calling it a strategic business decision, while a Gujarat representative stated that the franchise, which is owned by the US-based private equity firm CVC Capital, is focused on the men’s team, the defending Indian T20 League champions.

In the meantime, fans were shocked at Chennai’s decision to not participate in the much-talked-about Women’s tournament. “Can buy 2 franchise outside ipl and pay finished crickets but not even money for a women’s team,” a user tweeted. “@ChennaiIPL are you serious? Really disappointing if it is true,” another user wrote.
