Women's Asia Cup

The 13th match of the Women’s Asia Cup was a thrilling encounter between the arch-rivals India and Pakistan. India came into the match after hammering the United Arab Emirates by 104 runs while Pakistan received a defeat at the hands of Thailand in their last game.

Pakistan captain, Bismah Maroof won the toss and elected to bat first. Pooja Vastrakar gave India its first success as she removed opener Sidra Ameen with the score of 26 after 4.3 overs. Deepti Sharma got rid of Muneeba Ali shortly after to give a second blow to Pakistan. Sharma further dismissed Omaima Sohail in the same over to leave Pakistan reeling at 33/3 after six overs.

Captain Maroof and Nida Dar took it upon themselves to take their team out of misery as they added 76 runs for the fourth wicket. After Maroof’s dismissal, Dar continued the attack on the Indian bowlers as she brought up her half-century. Courtesy of her incredible knock, Pakistan reached the total of 137 in the allotted 20 overs. Dar remained unbeaten on 56 off 37 balls.

Deepti Sharma picked up three wickets while Pooja Vastrakar picked up two. India lost their opener Sabbhineni Meghana early on in the chase with the score on 23/1 after 3.2 overs. Pakistan quickly got the prized scalp of the in-from batter Jemimah Rodrigues, giving India a major blow.

The Indian chase lost its way in the middle as big names like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur failed to make a significant contribution in the chase. India were in all sorts of trouble at 91/7 after losing their captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh kept India in the hunt with her inspired knock of 26 off 13. However, she was dismissed in the 19th over with India still needing 18 off 9 balls.

With Ghosh’s dismissal, Pakistan tightened their grip on the match and won it by 13 runs. Nashra Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan who picked up three wickets for 30 runs in four overs. Sadia Iqbal and Nida Dar picked up two wickets each. Nidar Dar was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ award for her stupendous all-round show. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the thrilling match:
