T20 World Cup 2024
5 Indian players from 2016 World Cup squad who will play 2022 World Cup
The five players have remained in the Indian 20-20 squad for more than eight years.
The Indian team is gearing up for the upcoming 20-20 World Cup in Australia this year. Having performed poorly in the Asia Cup 2022, the team would be hoping to come up with a good showing at this year’s event. Indian team would certainly be looking to come up with a better performance than in the 2016 World Cup when it crashed out in the Semi-final against West Indies.
While the squad this year is very different to the last one, there are some who are still with the team this time around. Let’s look at five players from the 2016 World Cup who will play in the 2022 World Cup as well.
Rohit Sharma
The current Indian captain Rohit Sharma played the last 20-20 World Cup but did not make much of an impact in the mega event. In five matches, the right-hand batter was only able to score 88 runs at an average of 17.60.
This year he will be hoping to improve on the 2016 showing and hopefully take India to their second 20-20 World Cup win.
Virat Kohli
The star India batter Kohli was the Player of the tournament in the 2016 World Cup. Having made 273 runs at an average of 136.50 and a strike rate of 146.77. A highest score of unbeaten 89 along with three half-centuries were the highlight of Kohli’s 2016 World Cup. This will be Kohli’s fifth 20-20 World Cup and he would hope to emulate a similar form to that of the 2016 World Cup.
Ravi Ashwin
The Indian spinner played five matches for India in the 2016 World Cup but could only take four wickets in the whole tournament. The 36-year-old has been included in the Indian squad for this year’s world cup as well and would hope to take the Indian side further into the tournament than Semi-final.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya is going into this year’s mega event as one of the most important Indian players. The Gujarat-born all-rounder has more than cemented his place in the playing XI on the back of a sensational year. Having taken the Gujarat side to their inaugural Indian T20 League trophy, Pandya’s sight would be now set on the coveted World Cup.
In 2016, he took five wickets in five matches and was really poor with the bat.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was added to the 2016 Indian 20-20 World Cup squad as Mohammad Shami took time to recover from Grade II left hamstring injury.
Kumar did not play any games in the 2016 World Cup as Shami regained his full fitness ahead of the tournament. He will however be an important bowler for the team now that Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be ruled out.
