The T20 fever has taken over the entire world with the 20-20 World Cup announcing its arrival in grand fashion in Australia. After the group stage of the competition gets completed, the tournament will move to the Super 12 stage from Saturday onwards. With the top eight teams getting into action in the tournament, several big names of the cricketing world will also take the field to enthral the crowd with their skills.
The players will be seen giving their all in the field as they take their team to ultimate T20 glory. Among the several stars, only one will be given the coveted ‘Player of the Tournament’ award at the end of it. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five contenders for the prestigious award in the World Cup:
Suryakumar Yadav
The star batter has been in tremendous form of late which has seen him rise to the number two spot in the T20I batters rankings. He has amassed 801 runs in 23 innings at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 184 in the year 2022. He also became the fifth Indian batter to score a century in T20Is against England in July. Yadav is India’s X factor heading into the World Cup and will look to continue his brilliant form in the mega event.
Mohammad Rizwan
The Pakistan opener had a great outing in the last year’s edition scoring 281 runs in six innings at an average of 70 and a strike rate of 127. Rizwan has been scoring consistently this year as well having 718 runs to his name at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 127. His tremendous form has seen him rise to the top of the T20 batters rankings as well. After getting knocked out of the tournament in the semi-finals last year, Rizwan will be eager to take his team one step ahead and win their second 20-20 World Cup title.
David Miller
The southpaw is one of the most explosive batters in T20 cricket. Miller has been in tremendous form this year having scored 283 runs at an average of 56.60 and a strike rate of 186.18. South Africa have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup twice in 2009 and 2014. They had a great World Cup last year winning four out of five matches but failed to qualify due to a low net run rate.
Miller will be determined to take his team to its first-ever World Cup win in the upcoming edition with his stupendous hitting prowess.
Josh Hazlewood
Having made his debut in 2014, Hazlewood quickly rose through the ranks and cemented his place in the Australian team in all three formats. The seamer is one of the few bowlers in the world who are consistent performers in all three formats of the game. The 31-year-old will be once again seen at his best as Australie prepares for a successful defence at their home.
Wanindu Hasaranga
The wrist-spinner was the highest wicket-taker in the last edition of the world cup. He scalped 16 wickets in the tournament which is also the highest number of wickets taken by a bowler in a single edition of the 20-20 World Cup.
He will be once again raring to go in the tournament as Sri Lanka have qualified for the Super 12 stage. Having won the Asia Cup last month, the Lankan lions now have their eyes set on winning their second 20-20 World Cup. Hasaranga will prove to be Sri Lanka’s X factor in the tournament as they look to emulate their Asia Cup heroics.
