‘Yellow cards kis liye hai phir’ – Fans react to Caribbean Premier League announcing red card for over-rate violations
The umpires will hand out red cards to the player from the team whose over rate is slow after 19 overs of the innings
Penalties for sluggish over rates have been added to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023, which incorporates a red card-like system. According to the strict rule, if the fielding side is running late at the beginning of the 20th over in an inning, a player would be dismissed.
According to a source in ESPNcricinfo, the innings’ 17th over must be finished in 72 minutes & 15 seconds, the following over in 76 minutes & 30 seconds, the 19th over in 80 minutes & 45 seconds, and the final over in 85 minutes.
A player has to enter the fielding circle if the fielding side falls below the necessary over rate at the commencement of the 18th over, according to the report’s explanation of the penalties. In addition, one more player (for a total of six people inside the circle) must enter the fielding circle if the fielding team is under the over rate before the start of the 19th over.
Six players will stay within the fielding circle while one player chosen by the captain must leave the field if the fielding team is behind the needed rate at the beginning of their 20 over as well.
For the CPL 2023, penalties have also been established in place for the batting team. The umpires will issue a warning to the batters for time-wasting, and if they are caught doing it again, they will assess a five-run penalty to the team.
“We believe they are proportionate and necessary”: Michael Hall
Michael Hall, the tournament operations director for the CPL, expressed his thoughts on the revisions in a statement, saying that it is the responsibility of everyone engaged in cricket to keep the game alive.
He said, “We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend. It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving and we have sensitized both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament. Our hope is that these in-game penalties are not needed, but we believe they are proportionate and necessary.”

Red card for six balls is useless. Should be active immediately when the team crosses the time limit.

It could be misused, like batters will try to waste time in between overs just for that to happen

Which player will remove from the field?

And what if a batter deliberately waste time to get benefited at the end? Is it on umpires to give red cards or they have to?
